Once you have gotten a petition from Jessica (jessica@walkbikelansing.com,
517-214-5684)

be sure you review the following rules for petitioning before seeking signatures:

Before you begin circulating your petition, PLEASE:
    1. Be a Michigan resident, eligible to register to vote.

    2. Collect signatures ONLY from registered voters who live in the City of
Lansing – not Lansing Township, Okemos, Holt, etc.

Protect Yourself
Do not leave a petition unattended at any time or give your petition to other
people to obtain signatures for you. The certificate of circulation you sign
warrants that
you have witnessed every signature affixed to your petition. Any
claims that you did not witness the signatures can render your signatures
VOID. Don't let that happen!!!

Qualifying the Potential Signer
Only the signatures of REGISTERED VOTERS IN THE CITY OF LANSING count.

Make sure your signer is a qualified voter by ASKING THREE QUESTIONS:

First - Are you registered to vote in the City of Lansing?

Second - Have you moved since the last time you voted?  Did you re-
    register?

Third - When was the last time you voted?
(If they voted in the last mayoral election… Bernero/Benavides '05…they
    are registered.)

Getting a Valid Signature
    1. Signers must use their legal name.
EX: “Mrs. John Smith” is not acceptable. Initials instead of a full name are
    not acceptable.

    2. The signature must be written in ink only (no pencil or marker) and
    printed signatures are not valid.

    3. The signer’s residence address must be listed and must include the zip
code. The signer’s residence address must be the same as the address
on their drivers’ license.  P.O. Boxes are not acceptable.

    4. The date the person signed must be included. (not their birthday!)

    5. The printed name and address must be legible.

Filling in the Petition Form
    1. Column 1 is the registered voter’s full legal signature.

    2. Column 2 is the registered voter’s clearly printed Full Name.

    3. Column 3 is the registered voter’s clearly printed Street Address.

    4. Column 4 is the registered voter’s 5 digit Zip Code.

    5. Column 5 is the date the registered voter signed (NOT their birth date)

After You Have Finished Circulating Your Petition
    1. Sign and date the certificate of circulator portion, located at the bottom
of the petition. Be sure to include your Michigan residence address,
where you are registered to vote.

    2. Do not add signatures to any blank lines on the petition after you have
signed the bottom of it as circulator – you will invalidate the petition.  The
circulator’s date MUST be ON or AFTER all signature dates on the petition.

    3. Return petitions to Complete Streets Lansing BQC, PO Box 15010,
Lansing MI  48901, or email Jessica Yorko, 517-214-5684,
