Congratulations! We have collected
5,000 signatures to make Lansing safer
for people who are walking, bicycling,
in wheelchairs, using walkers, using the
bus…. kids walking to school, etc. And
we only achieved this enormous and
challenging goal because of a
tremendous grassroots, volunteer
effort.
The signatures went our City Clerk’s
office on July 10.
The Lansing Complete Streets
Ordinance is one of the most
“implementable” ordinances to make a
city walk and bike friendly in the
nation. Many other cities have been
passing resolutions of support---- which
is basically just a statement of values
with no teeth or requirements for
implementation.
The Lansing Complete Streets
Ordinance actually requires Lansing to
have a non-motorized network plan
and to update it every 5 years.
Because it actually requires a policy
change, we should see real changes to
how Lansing looks, feels, and functions
as a result of this ordinance. The
development of the plan is already
underway, thanks to the 200 people
who participated in the planning
sessions in early March. The summary
of those sessions and an online

Our local ordinance is also stirring and
encouraging efforts at the state level to
implement Complete Streets Policies,
such as the amendment to the state
transportation funding bill past in June.
For the first time, the bill included
language for Complete Streets stating
that "The department [MDOT] and local
road agencies that receive
appropriations under this act shall
adopt complete street policies." This
policy will ensure that transportation
planners and engineers design and
operate the roadway with all users in
mind whether they are motorists,
public transportation vehicles and
riders, bicyclists or pedestrians of all
ages and abilities. This language does
not appropriate any new funding, nor
does it take away from any current
funding, but rather ensures a
comprehensive policy for the use of
existing dollars." More details at

We still need your help to make sure
the Lansing Complete Streets
Ordinance passes. The BEST way to do
this is for each of us, and all of our
friends, to contact the Lansing City
Council members and URGE them to
pass this ordinance. Once the Clerk
gets the petitions, they have 15 days to
review the signatures (July 10-July 25),
and then the proposal will go on the
next City Council agenda (July 27 or
August 3).
